A <strong>Grey-Headed Swamphen <\/strong><em>Porphyrio [porphyrio] poliocephalus <\/em>was at Irkayya Lagoons on 22May; this was only the fourth record of the species but it may be under-recorded in comparison with the more abundant <strong>African Swamphen<\/strong> <em>P. madagscariensis<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">The first <strong>Greater Painted-Snipe <\/strong><em>Rostratula benghalensis <\/em>for Qatar was discovered at Irkayya Lagoons on 3 May. &nbsp;The adult female was present until 10 May.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" src=\"https:\/\/qatarbirds.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/greater-painted-snipe.jpg?w=840\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/qatarold.cs-aspirations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/greater-painted-snipe.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/qatarold.cs-aspirations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/greater-painted-snipe-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/qatarold.cs-aspirations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/greater-painted-snipe-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/qatarold.cs-aspirations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/greater-painted-snipe-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/qatarold.cs-aspirations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/greater-painted-snipe-1536x1024.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><figcaption>Greater-Painted Snipe \u00a9 Simon Tull<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Two <strong>Spur-Winged Lapwing <\/strong><em>Vanellus spinosus <\/em>were at West Saliya Lagoons on 1 March and on 22 to at least 3 June.  A single <strong>White-Tailed Lapwing <\/strong><em>Vanellus leucurus <\/em>was at Irkayya Farm on 1 February. A summer plumage <strong>Caspian Plover <\/strong><em>Charadrius asiaticus <\/em>was at Irkayya Farm on 30 April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">A <strong>European Nightjar<\/strong> <em>Caprimulgus europaeus<\/em> was at Al Bidda Park, central Doha \u2013 an exceptionally early record. The appearance of the species in larger numbers at the beginning of May was more typical. A<strong> Black Scrub Robin<\/strong><em> Cercotrichas podobe<\/em> was at Irkayya Farm on 10 May. A <strong>Thrush Nightingale <\/strong><em>Luscinia luscinia<\/em>was at Al Shamal Park on 26 April. <strong>White-throated Robin<\/strong> <em>Irania gutturalis<\/em> made their usual appearance in the last week of April, but numbers peaked later than usual and individuals at Al Shamal Park on May 17 and at Al Wakra on 19 May were particularly late records. A female <strong>Semi-collared Flycatcher <\/strong><em>Ficedula semitorquata<\/em> was at Al Shamal Park on 26 April. Two <strong>Yellow-Throated Sparrow <\/strong><em>Gymnoris xanthocollis<\/em> were at Abu Dhalouf Park 22-29 March. As noted above, <strong>Yellow Wagtail<\/strong> <em>Motacilla flava<\/em> numbers were substantially reduced in comparison with past years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Over the second half of the year there were three <strong>Greater White-Fronted Goose<\/strong> <em>Anser albifrons<\/em> were at an undisclosed location on 17th November. A <strong>Lesser Flamingo<\/strong> <em>Phoeniconaias minor<\/em> was recently reported, with the sighting from Al Shamal dating back to 3rd Dec 2013. This is the only record of the species for Qatar. A <strong>Eurasian Bittern<\/strong> was at Irrikaya Farm Lagoons on 1st November.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">A single pale form <strong>European Honey Buzzard <\/strong><em>Pernis apivorus <\/em>was at Irrikaya Farm on 24th November. Two <strong>Crested Honey Buzzard<\/strong> <em>Pernis ptilorhyncus<\/em> were at Al Aamriya on 9th December. There were three separate sightings of <strong>Short-Toed Snake Eagle<\/strong> <em>Circaetus gallicus<\/em> at various locations between mid October and mid December.
