There were five individuals at Irkayya Farm identified from photographs  between 21 Dec 2019 and 26 Jan 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qatarbirds.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/crested_honey_buzzard.jpg?w=840\" alt=\"A crested honey buzzard seen in Doha, Qatar\" class=\"wp-image-694\" \/><figcaption>Crested Honey Buzzard. Irkayya Farm 17 Jan 2020. \u00a9 Simon Tull<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>There was a further sighting at Education City, Doha on 26 Jan and another at a residential compound in West Bay, Doha on 9 April 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Should this be part of a trend, it may parallel observations from the Eastern Provence of Saudi Arabia, where the species has been found overwintering at a park in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdsofsaudiarabia.com\/search\/label\/Crested%20Honey-Buzzard\">Jubail<\/a>. It is  noteworthy that in both cases,  the species has a preference for cultivated areas such as farms, park and gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Other notable raptor sightings &#8211; all at Irkayya Farm &#8211; in the early part of the year included a male <strong>Hen Harrier<\/strong> <em>Circus cyaneus<\/em> on 30 January, a dark morph <strong>Long-Legged Buzzard <\/strong><em>Buteo (rufinous) rufinus<\/em> on 17 January and a rufous phase bird between 12 January and 2 February.  A <strong>Short-Toed Snake Eagle<\/strong> <em>Cicaetus gallicus<\/em> was present from 27 Feb to 2 March.&nbsp;Two <strong>Black-Winged Kite<\/strong> <em>Elanus caeruleus <\/em>were at Irkayya Farm 24-26 Jan, with one confirmed as belonging to the race <em>vociferous.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was a minimum of three <strong>Richard\u2019s Pipit <\/strong><em>Anthus richardi <\/em>at Irkayya Farm from 21 to 29 February, unusual for a species that has only been seen singly and sporadically before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qatarbirds.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/qatar_atr_richards_pipit.jpg?w=840\" alt=\"A Richard's Pipit seen in Qatar\" class=\"wp-image-709\" \/><figcaption>Richard&#8217;s Pipit \u00a9 Simon Tull<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Possibly the most surprising record from the early part of the year was that of a male <strong>Purple Sunbird <\/strong><em>Cinnyris asiaticus<\/em> at Al Meshaf on 31 Jan, and then another  sighting of a male at Doha Sewage Farm, some 30 km away, on 8 Feb &#8211; these were the first records for the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\"><strong>Semi-Collared Flycatchers<\/strong> <em>Ficedula semitorquata<\/em> were widespread in March and April, with two males at farm near Rawdat al Ajuz on 24 March, one male at Doha Golf Course on 31 March, two males and one female at a farm near Abu Thaylah on 1 Apr, a female at Wakra on 2 Apr and individual males at a farm near Al Numan on 5 Apr and Shamal Park on 17 Apr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1501\" height=\"915\" src=\"https:\/\/qatarbirds.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/qatar_atr_semi_collared_flycatcher.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"A male semi-collared flycatcher seen in Qatar\" class=\"wp-image-715\" srcset=\"https:\/\/qatarold.cs-aspirations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/qatar_atr_semi_collared_flycatcher.jpg 1501w, https:\/\/qatarold.cs-aspirations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/qatar_atr_semi_collared_flycatcher-300x183.jpg 300w, https:\/\/qatarold.cs-aspirations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/qatar_atr_semi_collared_flycatcher-1024x624.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/qatarold.cs-aspirations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/qatar_atr_semi_collared_flycatcher-768x468.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1501px) 100vw, 1501px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Semi-Collared Flycatcher<\/strong> <em>Ficedula semitorquata<\/em> \u00a9 Gavin Farnell<br><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">The Shamal area proved fruitful during the first half of the year. A <strong>Wryneck<\/strong> <em>Jynx torquilla<\/em> on 17 January, was an unseasonal record for a species more usually seen in March-April and September-October. It has been acquired by a private zoo and was seen there during a visit, along with a <strong>Steppe Eagle<\/strong> <em>Aquila nipalensis<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qatarbirds.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/qatar_rbr_griffon_vulture.jpg?w=576\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-721\" width=\"288\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/qatarold.cs-aspirations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/qatar_rbr_griffon_vulture.jpg 900w, https:\/\/qatarold.cs-aspirations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/qatar_rbr_griffon_vulture-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/qatarold.cs-aspirations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/qatar_rbr_griffon_vulture-576x1024.jpg 576w, https:\/\/qatarold.cs-aspirations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/qatar_rbr_griffon_vulture-768x1365.jpg 768w, https:\/\/qatarold.cs-aspirations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/qatar_rbr_griffon_vulture-864x1536.jpg 864w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" \/><figcaption>Eurasian Griffon Vulture<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">A <strong>Greater-Spotted Cuckoo <\/strong><em>Clamador glandarius <\/em>was shot by hunters near Messaieed on 10 March. On a brighter note, the first established breeding of <strong>Hoopoe<\/strong> <em>Upapa epops <\/em>was recorded during the period, at a private farm between Doha and Al Khor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Noteable sightings of waders during the early part of the year included a<strong> Spur-Winged Lapwing <\/strong><em>Vanellus spinosus<\/em> at West Saliya on 17 March, which had increased to three birds by 17 April.
